Firefox 3.x hanging on Aspire One

On my Aspire One, which is running UNR, Firefox hangs for a few seconds then resumes. Its annoying and becomes more frequent over time, especially with page loads.

I’ve commented on this before, and it seems that sqlite3 when combined with an SSD is the culprit. I disabled phishing protection (yes, careful, dragons, blah) a few weeks ago but the problem resurfaced recently. Then I realised that history is stored the same way and defaults to holding 90 days of history. The file places.sqlite had grown very large.

So I’ve disabled it too and deleted all the *.sqlite files in my Firefox profile and the hangs have stopped.

  1. Thats good to know! My wifes Aspire has the same problem and I havent had the time to check it out. Though it does seem to be a crude solution :/

Mount your profile into ram instead.

Thanks for the link – I’ve seen this solution but I’m still not sure of the benefit of sqlite3 and even restricting to 64Mb, given the limited RAM on these devices, a RAM disk is a trade off- especially when there are a number of other areas all ready mounted in this fashion. In my case I don’t use the phishing filter nor do I really need to store history.

For anyone else posting – I don’t keep email addresses, they’re used to validate against a spam filter “clever” addresses like a@b.com just get caught in the spam filters and I don’t see them. If this doesn’t sit well then you can use OpenID!

What’s the file system? Ext4 and sqlite do not play well together, barriers are the issue.

  6. Good to know! A friend of mine has a similar problem, we’ll see if this fixes it.

    Thank you!

  7. Firefox 3 is really horrible on an Asus EeePC 900.

libeatmydata is a possible solution, if you accept that you might lose all your bookmarks/history if the system crashes.

IIRC I heard that Firefox 3.5 will have a proper fix/workaround for this.

Yes I saw that somewhere on Mozilla’s bug tracker but can’t find it now, here’s hoping because Firefox has a number of extensions I particularly like.
