Write at haste repent at leisure

I wrote a quick blog post last night, where I learned a lesson – don’t write to a syndicated blog late at night after a long day.

I’ve corrected the post now, where I remarked I’d untarred a tarball to the root, which I know isn’t best practice but its what I did in the early hours of the morning on a pre-production system where I know the contents of that tarball.

So apologies to anyone that this offended – such as the first comment I received (which was so rude I’m not submitting it). My post is apparently so bad it’s to be featured on a site known as ubuntunoobs.com.

I was wondering what this was, what its about and why its being used as a threat to those giving their time to try and make open source software, particularly Ubuntu that little bit better. Then I realised that I’m too busy doing that to care.

If this sounds like sour grapes, it isn’t, after all to err is after all human but to forgive is divine.

  1. Perhaps I was a bit rude (as the mentioned first commenter), however, the reason why I was rude is exactly the same reason ubuntunoobs.com will be launched soon. When people talk about Ubuntu, I often say “for noobs, by noobs”, as a joke. However, sometimes it’s partly correct, although not just referring to Ubuntu developers, but also to the community. One excellent example of this is automatix, and later ultimatix.

From your post I understand you do agree that you made an error, and you are definately right that to err is human. However what you wrote in your post might cause issues when you upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu. Because you are a somewhat experienced Ubuntu user (or so I assume), that won’t be much of an issue for you. However for every noob that reads your blog and tries it, it might cause serious frustration while upgrading.

I hope this explains my previous comment and chills any hatred that I might have caused. Also, now you mentioned my new website on your blog I’m forced to actually put it up, so I hereby invite you to take a look in a few hours and, if you like, write about it.
    Regards,

    Michael

  2. @Michael Croes: There is one point you’ve missed: people caring.

It really isn’t up to you to determine what’s right and wrong though and it certainly doesn’t advocate being rude to Ubuntu members on their syndicated feed.

What you have missed is that this is specifically for Ubuntu Netbook Remix which its users understand is not yet a production Ubuntu system. I am using it primarily because I’m writing the current documentation chain for it.

I also now realise that your point is about not using packages. The post states a link to a bug report and the course of action is to update the libqt3-mt package but that as that is not likely to happen soon (as UNR is based soley around 8.04 at present), then this is an interim solution.

The “for noobs by noobs” remark is also very insulting. You’re making a major assumption – that we’re new to Ubuntu and or development and that is not the case at all, as it happens I’ve been with GNU/Linux for over fifteen years. I don’t feel the need to hand hold and state the obvious to those who follow my blog because they don’t tend to need it.

I’m not interested in some protracted argument so best of luck to you but I will say that if you hadn’t mentioned your site then neither would I.

  4. I wrote a short and beautiful note defending your post and condemning flamers, but WordPress ate it.

    *sigh*
