Stepping back

docteam2-150x150

I’m stepping back from the Documentation Team.

The last few years have been a great experience. Working mainly with documentation and training – I’ve improved my writing style, my second language, led sessions on IRC and OpenWeeks, expanded my knowledge of unfamiliar areas whilst documenting, learned a great deal about working in distributed teams and above all met some great people along the way.

Unfortunately I haven’t got as much spare time as I did last year. I’m studying with the Open University. Last year I took two courses concurrently and found it more time consuming than I expected – I seemed to be forever burning the midnight oil. These were subjects I am familiar with, this year is completely new to me and on a more demanding course.

I have career courses, five weeks of them, starting in a weeks time. Then I’m on pre deployment training and am deployed from January through to May. Training twice daily in the gym is taking more time out and means I go to bed earlier! Time with Lisa and the children is at a premium so all things considered, something has to give.

Over the last year, I have felt somewhat marginalised within the Documentation Team and I’m no longer enjoying it. This, combined with it being the largest effort I’m involved in makes it sensible to leave it. I might well return to it next year, indeed I hope to.

So I wish everyone the best of luck with Karmic, which I’m sure will be a success. I’d like to thank everyone I’ve worked with and apologise for the timing this close to release.

Disappointed in the publicness of this blog post. I think you made the statement you wanted to make to the Ubuntu-Docs team and I think publically airing these to Planet Ubuntu is disappointing.

While I agreed with you on many things I think this is a very disappointing way of stating your problems. It speaks of “taking your ball and going home.”

    Sorry

I think a single line stating how I feel is fine, especially when explained a long side my other reasons.

Actually posted this first, the mail to the team was because I’m making this post.

The remark about “taking my ball” is unnecessary, there’s no need to say sorry though.
