I think I will get a Samsung NC10, it looks really great and has good specs. Or does anybody know a notebook with similar specs?

Hi Dougie! I was quite impressed with the specs, but I was unsure about Samsung as a netbook manufacturer... The only question would be: did you think that it could use with another gig of RAM while using it?

All the rest seems perfect, I'll probably go and buy it soon :)

Cheers!

Hi Dougie!

I was delighted with your post because I was a bit lost in my hunt for a good netbook. About a month ago I found this NC10 thingie but I was a bit sceptical since I've never seen (or perhaps even heard) of a Samsung netbook/notebook. The specs seem great, especially the battery life, and now I'm so pleased to learn that Ubuntu works well on it.

I have only a slight problem with it having only 1 GB of RAM. Does it show? Did you think that it might use another gig of RAM while using it?

I'm pretty fired up, I'll probably just go and buy it :)

May it serve you in health ;)

I've owned an NC10 since Feb 09 and run XP Home, 7 Ultimate, Kubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu 9.10 without problems. Only with (K)Ubuntu 9.10 did all the hardware work out of the box :)

In order to get the screen brightness to work out of the box you need to upgrade to BIOS 11CA (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=UK&CttFileID=2026184&CDCttType=FM&ModelType=N&ModelName=NP-NC10&VPath=FM/200909/20090915143220062/Win_NC10_11CA07D0.exe). Then it works without configuration or additional apps.

Personally I've been using 9.10 as my main OS daily since Alpha 2 and have no plans of changing to anything else anytime soon. This is a solid piece of kit.

I hadn't any problems with the brightness working from the Fn+Up combination but may have been looking at the notification slider rather than the actual brightness.

I've avoided SD booting, in fact SD use in general. I had my home folder on an SD card in Arch Linux on the Acer Aspire One and found it corupted with power saving, unless using XFS. That said it may have been addressed as I haven't seen mention of the issue for a while.

You're right though, they are solid - no creaky parts of the case and the lids lifts with a reassuring sound.

A friend of mine has the NC10 and loves it. The only caveat they ran into was installing xbacklight (I believe) then adding the brightness control to the panel. Other than that everything is flawless in 9.10 for them. If I could have bought an off the shelf NC10 here cheap I would have instead of my 1005HA. The only drawback that I found is none of the Samsungs (any of them I believe) will boot from the SD Card. I still would have purchased one though, they're a solid build.
